RNSG 1141 Nursing Care to Promote Mental Health
Nursing care to promote mental health is offered in the second semester of the first year of the Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) program. This course focuses on the delivery of safe, patient-centered, evidence-based nursing care for culturally diverse individuals across the lifespan experiencing alterations in mental health. Course content includes foundational concepts of mental health nursing, therapeutic communication, psychosocial assessment, and application of the nursing process and clinical judgment. Common mental health disorders addressed include anxiety, schizophrenia, mood disorders, substance use disorders, personality disorders, eating disorders, and conditions involving aggressive or abusive behaviors, with care considerations for children, adolescents, older adults, and special populations integrated throughout. Clinical experiences provide opportunities for students to deliver coordinated nursing care in acute, ambulatory, and community settings while functioning as a student in an entry-level ASN program. This is a web enhanced course; students may be required to access course content, submit assignments, or complete assignments online through Blackboard ultra and/or other learning platforms.
