Program Description
The Breastfeeding Counselor Certificate program provides academic foundations at the certificate level to provide education and counseling in breastfeeding and human lactation, for students admitted in the Human Lactation Program. Program graduates are prepared to achieve education competencies and adhere to a code of ethics. They provide education, counseling and support. The Program will provide practical experience in breastfeeding counseling skills, as well as education in human lactation, breastfeeding and general health sciences. Graduates of this Program will attain the Breastfeeding Counselor certificate, considered a stepping-stone to the Human Lactation Program completion, and pre-cursor to IBLCE (International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners) exam eligibility.
Entrance Requirements:
Age: Minimum of 17 years of age for entrance into pre-occupational curriculum. 18 years old for entrance into occupational program curriculum.
Other:
- Completion of application and related procedures
- Completion of all pre-occupational curriculum courses for the Breastfeeding Counselor program.
- Set up appointment with program director to submit Eligibility Form for Breastfeeding Counselor.
- Ability to comply with health-related standards and meet minimum essential skill requirements.
- Documentation of immunization records.
- Payment of fees for liability insurance.
- Documentation of current CPR certification.
- Completion of background check and drug screen.
Retention Policies:
- Students must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or better. A “C” must be achieved in each course in order to progress to the next step in the Breastfeeding Counselor program.
- Students must attain a numerical grade of 70 or better in each Lactation course, including clinical rotations, to progress in the program.
- A student must maintain CPR certification and carry professional liability insurance while enrolled in Lactation courses.

All current admission requirements must be met before applying for readmission.
