Program Description:

The Medical Assisting program prepares students for employment in a variety of positions in today’s medical offices. The Medical Assisting program provides learning opportunities, which introduce, develop, and reinforce academic and occupational knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. Additionally, the program provides opportunities to upgrade present knowledge and skills or to retrain in the area of medical assisting. Graduates of the program receive a Medical Assisting Diploma.

Program Goal: To prepare medical assistants who are competent in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains to enter the profession.

The Medical Assisting diploma program at Georgia Northwestern Technical College is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB).

Entrance Dates:

Beginning of any semester for pre-occupational curriculum. Fall semester for occupational curriculum on the WCC. Fall and Spring semesters for occupational curriculum on the FCC.

Entrance Requirements:

Age: Minimum of 17 years of age for entrance into pre-occupational curriculum. 18 years old for entrance into occupational program curriculum.

Other:

  1. Completion of GNTC application and related procedures.
  2. Complete the program waiting list form and the General Health Orientation online during the last term enrolled in pre-occupational courses.  Once on the waiting list, students are admitted into the occupational courses as space allows.
  3. Once accepted into the occupational courses, attend a mandatory Medical Assisting orientation.
  4. Ability to comply with health-related standards and meet minimum essential skill requirements. Documentation of the Technical Standards Assessment Form.
  5. Documentation of immunization records.
  6. Payment of fees for liability insurance.
  7. Completion of background check and drug screen.

Retention Policies:

  1. Students must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or better. A “C” must be achieved in each course in order to progress to the next step in the Medical Assisting program.
  2. Students must attain a numerical grade of 70 or better in each Medical Assisting course, including clinical rotations, to progress in the program.
  3. A student must carry professional liability insurance while enrolled in Medical Assisting courses.

Readmission Policies

All current admission requirements must be met before applying for readmission.

Program Final Exit Point:

Graduates from the Medical Assisting program are eligible to apply to take a national certification exam to become credentialed medical assistants.
